Heads up September 2014

Heads Up! is the ad-hoc newsletter for SAHISA members. It covers issues such as new membership, SAHISA events and professional development for heads. This is the September 2014 edition.

As Spring approaches, I hope all is well in your personal and professional lives. The Heads of some of our schools have enjoyed a break, while others are truly in the midst of busy terms.

We are delighted to announce that the Wits Business School (WBS) will again host the Leadership Development Programme in 2015, depending on numbers. The 15-day Programme is designed to provide school leadership with powerful ideas and strategic skills in the areas of governance, management, finance, marketing, intrapersonal understanding and optimising people management. The focus is on a strategic overview of these areas, not the detail of each area.

Broken up into two parts, the 2015 Programme in Johannesburg is built around two full-time modules which will be run in about mid-May and late June 2015. Exact dates are to be confirmed. For certification purposes it is compulsory for participants to attend the full programme and undertake a strategic assignment on their school.

The cost of the 2015 LDP will be in the region of R34 000 per delegate. The ETDP SETA will be approached for funding and more information will be communicated as soon as possible. In order for the course to be financially viable, we need 30 full-paying delegates to be registered. The WBS will offer one free registration for those schools who send two full-fee paying delegates. If you are interested in attending the course, please contact Jenny Mundell at jennym@isasa.org by 30 October at the latest. Once we have received responses, we will be in a position to decide whether the WBS LDP will be offered in 2015.

In just a few days many of us will gather in Port Elizabeth for the 2014 SAHISA Conference. We trust that you will find the deliberations stimulating and the opportunities to engage with colleagues most enriching and enjoyable.

The delegate registration list confirming flights and accommodation details has been circulated to those attending the conference. The electronic programme will be circulated within the next few days.Delegates are reminded that no hard copy will be available. The South East Region Committee members look forward to welcoming you to the conference.

In closing …

The curious leader looks beyond the present and has an eye on the next steps, drip feeding the future, while simultaneously shaking people from their comfort zone. After all, leadership is scarce because few people are willing to go through the discomfort required to lead.

Best wishes and keep smiling!
